Today's fast-paced lifestyle increases stress levels in individuals and can negatively affect mental health. Stress plays an important role in the development of mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. In recent years, research on the positive effects of probiotics, and particularly psychobiotics, on stress and mental health has increased. Psychobiotics interact with the central nervous system through the gut-brain axis, improving gastrointestinal function as well as increasing antidepressant and anxiolytic capacity [1].

Psychobiotics can improve mental health by regulating the gut microbiota. In particular, probiotic strains such as Lactobacillus Plantarum and Lactobacillus Brevis have been shown to be effective in the treatment of depression. In a study, patients with mild to moderate depression who were given these probiotics in combination with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) experienced a significant reduction in depressive symptoms [1]. These findings suggest that the use of probiotics in combination with antidepressant treatments may enhance treatment efficacy.

Effects on Stress and Anxiety

Stress and anxiety have become an inevitable part of modern life. The potential of psychobiotics to alleviate stress and anxiety symptoms has been the focus of research in this area. It is suggested that psychobiotics reduce stress and anxiety levels by exerting positive effects on the central nervous system through immune, hormonal, and neural pathways [1]. These effects may become more pronounced with regular use of probiotics.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the positive effects of probiotics, and particularly psychobiotics, on stress and mental health are supported by recent research. Psychobiotics have been shown to interact with the central nervous system through the gut-brain axis, alleviating symptoms of mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. These findings suggest that the use of probiotics in conjunction with traditional treatment methods may be an effective strategy for improving mental health.

In this article, we discussed the relationship between stress and probiotic use, highlighting the potential benefits of probiotics for mental health. Future comprehensive studies will deepen our knowledge in this area and help us better understand the effects of probiotics on mental health.
