Probiotics have become an increasingly popular topic in the field of health in recent years. These live microorganisms are known for their positive effects on digestive health. However, the benefits of probiotics are not limited to the digestive system; they have also been shown to have an effect on the immune system, metabolic diseases, and even neurological disorders.

The Effects of Probiotics on Health

Digestive Health

Probiotics play an important role in improving digestive health. They can be effective in alleviating symptoms of conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Certain probiotic strains, such as Bifidobacterium infantis 35624, have been shown to reduce IBS symptoms like abdominal pain and bloating [1] [2]. Additionally, probiotics have been proven to be beneficial in preventing diarrhea associated with antibiotic use [3].

Metabolic Diseases

The effects of probiotics on metabolic diseases are also noteworthy. In particular, probiotics have been shown to improve glycemic control in conditions such as type 2 diabetes. A meta-analysis revealed that probiotic supplementation reduces fasting plasma glucose and insulin levels [4]. Probiotics such as Akkermansia muciniphila have also been reported to be effective in alleviating metabolic disorders and inflammatory responses [5].

Immune System and Neurological Health

The positive effects of probiotics on the immune system cannot be overlooked. In particular, early probiotic supplementation in children has been shown to reduce the risk of developing neurological disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Asperger syndrome [6]. This suggests that probiotics may not only affect the gut microbiota but also central nervous system functions.

Conclusion

Probiotics offer a wide range of health benefits, from digestive health to metabolic diseases, and from the immune system to neurological disorders. Therefore, incorporating probiotics into the daily diet may be an important step toward improving overall health and quality of life. However, the effects of probiotics can vary from person to person, so it is important to select probiotic strains appropriate for individual needs. Future comprehensive studies will help us better understand the effects of probiotics on health.
